Meet Dr. Farina Islam
Dr. Farina Islam, a board eligible obstetrician and gynecologist, is the newest addition to our team at Damon Cobb OB/GYN. Moving to the United States from Bangladesh as a child, first to NYC and then settling with her family in Georgia, Dr. Islam is fluent in both English and Bengali.
Dr. Islam reminisces that the most memorable moment from her childhood was her move to the U.S.
“The first time I set foot in the United States, I was surrounded by my family and opportunity. I was so happy to have my family by my side as I embraced my new life and American culture,” Islam reminisced.
Settling in Georgia, Dr. Islam got her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia. From there, she went on to study medicine at Ross University School of Medicine.
While in college, Dr. Islam began shadowing and volunteering at an OB/GYN office. She found herself immediately inspired by the caring and compassionate nature found in obstetrics and gynecology. She was in awe of how an OB/GYN could affect a woman’s life in such a positive manner. From there, she knew that’s what we wanted to specialize in.
“I always wanted to help people and found medicine fascinating. I wanted a career that was not only challenging and rewarding but one that really allowed me to help impact someone’s life for the better,” Islam explained.
Obstetrics and gynecology did all that. Once she knew her focus, Dr. Islam gathered wealth of medical knowledge and diverse and objective perspective of different healthcare systems as she traveled the United States, studying at many different hospitals and offices.
“My diverse life and work experience has molded me into who I am today. Focused on individual care, I want my patients to be included in my medical management. Both Dr. Cobb and I believe in evidence-based medicine with a holistic approach,” Dr. Islam impressed. “We are firm believers in the power of a woman’s body.”
Thinking about her journey through her medical career, Dr. Islam notes her favorite thing about her job is the lasting relationship she develops with her patients.
“It’s an amazing feeling when you realize you become a part of a patient’s family. I love meeting new pregnant moms, guiding them through their pregnancies, and seeing their faces when they bring their baby into the world. Additionally, I enjoy working with moms with fertility issues, helping them find a solution, whatever that may be.”
Dr. Islam also noted the unforgettable life moment when she was able to deliver one of her very own nephews.
“I was a resident when my sister went into preterm labor, and I just happened to be working that day,” Dr. Islam recalled. “It was an amazing experience.”
Dr. Islam enjoys managing low and high risk pregnancies, and she has continued her studies within their specialty to ensure that she has a vast knowledge of the most innovative treatments available in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Islam is certified in state of the art robotic, laparoscopic surgery using the DaVinci System.
Asked if she could give a piece of advice to women, medical or non-medical, as a doctor and a woman, Dr. Islam stated this:
“As women, we generally are nurturers and tend to put ourselves last. We want to make sure our family and friends are taken care of. Those are amazing and wonderful qualities, but it does take a toll. I encourage all my patients to take time for themselves: to rest, exercise, and eat well. Do at least one thing for themselves a day, even if it’s just 5 minutes to meditate.”
Having only been in San Diego for three months, Dr. Islam and husband are immensely enjoying the area. An avid hiker, kayaker, traveler, and foodie, she is always taking recommendations on the best places to dine at.
“I’ll try anything once,” she laughed.
